English (core subject)

Overview:

English seeks to promote and develop proficiencies in speaking, listening, reading, viewing and writing. Building competence in English skills and knowledge assures students’ access to the full range of opportunities into their future.

Assessment activities:

Semester 1:

CAT 1 Argument Analysis – students read persuasive texts to understand the arguments authors used, how they presented them and analyse why those choices were made.
CAT 2 Written Persuasive Piece – students develop their own opinion on a current issue.
CAT 3 Oral Presentation – students orally present their opinion on a current issue.
CAT 4 Text Response – students read a novel and write an analytical essay demonstrating their knowledge of many aspects of the text.

Semester 2:

CAT 1 Comparative Writing – students read one text and view another, looking at the similarities and differences between the two and write a comparative essay.
CAT 2 Argument Analysis – students read persuasive texts to understand the arguments authors used, how they presented them and analyse why those choices were made.
CAT 3 Oral Presentation – students orally present their opinion on a current issue.
CAT 4 Creative Writing – students view a film and develop a creative piece in response to this text.

Selection advice:

Year 10 English is the choice for any student who has completed Year 9 English (including those students who have found Year 9 difficult) or any Year 9 SEALP student where English is not their area of strength and they would benefit from consolidation skills.
