Foundation Mathematics is designed for students looking to strengthen core mathematical skills for everyday life and future work. This course focuses on practical numeracy and builds confidence in applying maths in familiar, real-world situations.

Students will learn to:

  • Apply numeracy in contexts such as personal finance, measurement, and data interpretation.
  • Understand and use ratios, percentages, and proportions in practical scenarios.
  • Engage in activities involving statistics, geometry, and basic algebra relevant to daily life.
  • Build mathematical literacy to support decision-making at work and in personal settings.
  • Use of calculators and digital tools will support students’ mathematical modelling and applications.

 

 

 

 

Selection advice

This subject will suit students are interested in a course that focuses on more concrete applications of Maths skills. This subject runs over both semesters. Use of calculators and digital tools will support students’ mathematical modelling and applications.

This course prepares students for VCE Foundation Mathematics or the VCE Vocational Major Numeracy. It is suited to students whose future pathways do not require higher-level abstract mathematics.
