Mathematical Methods / Specialist Pathway

Mathematics

Year 10

Core

Core Subject – 2 Semesters

The Methods/Specialist Pathway is a mathematics program for students who wish to undertake VCE Mathematical Methods and potentially Specialist Mathematics. It builds a strong foundation in algebraic reasoning, functions, and problem-solving techniques that are critical for advanced mathematics.

Students will learn to:

· Develop deep understanding of algebra, functions, and their graphs.

· Apply index laws, factorisation, and quadratic equations.

· Investigate trigonometry, exponentials, and probability.

· Build skills in analysis, proof, and reasoning to prepare for higher mathematics.

· Use a CAS calculator to support mathematical modelling and problem-solving.

It is essential that students purchase the Ti N-Spire CAS Calculator (approx. $240) to complete this subject.

Selection advice

This is the only subject that prepares students who intend completing Mathematical Methods (CAS) Units 1-4. Students will need to have an interest and aptitude for Maths and have achieved above level in Year 9 Maths or Year 9 SEALP Maths. This subject runs over both semesters. Students should seek guidance from the Careers Coordinator as to which Maths they should undertake for their desired university course.

Links to further pathways

This subject leads directly into VCE Mathematical Methods and, optionally, Specialist Mathematics, preparing students for STEM and commerce-related university courses.
