Visual & Performing Arts Elective – 1 Semester

In Year 10 Visual Communication Design, students develop key skills in manual drawing, digital/computer generated drawing and design, using specialist programs such as Adobe Photoshop, Adobe Illustrator, AutoCAD, 3D models and laser cutting design.  Visual Communication Design focuses on the design, drawing and presentation techniques which are used in a variety of design industries such as: Graphic Design, Product Design, Architecture, Landscape Design, Interior Design, Illustration, Fashion, Engineering, Drafting, Packaging design, Web design.

Students will have the opportunity to develop skills in a variety of design technology.

Practical areas of study

  • Develop an understanding of the ways in which creative professionals generate ideas and develop them into high quality presentations.
  • Understand visual presentations and the design process.
  • Learn to generate imagery using a variety of methods including:  Freehand illustration (drawing)  freehand from direct observation
  • Technical (Engineering) Drawing – Orthogonal and Isometric
  • Technical Drawing (Architecture / Interior Design) – Floorplans, Perspective Drawing
  • Adobe Photoshop – photo manipulation, Adobe Illustrator – digital drawing
  • Use appropriate computer based program to create designs -3Dimensional computer modelling and rendering
  • Poster, Logo Design, Packaging Design,
  • A folio of all design work completed.

 

It is expected that all students maintain a folio/sketchbook to record development of ideas and designs and to make written annotated reflections on all work produced. The recording of all media processes, annotation of tasks and a reflection at the end of each production is essential.

Theoretical areas of study

In this subject student’s will: explore designers and their design work.

This unit focuses on using visual language to communicate messages, ideas and concepts. This involves acquiring and applying design thinking skills. Through experimentation and through exploration of the relationship between design elements and design principles, students develop an understanding of how design elements and principles affect the visual message and the way information and ideas are read and perceived.

 

Selection advice

A minimum of one Visual & Performing Arts subject needs to be studied at Year 10.
